Organic Farming
Products of organic farming not only help to ensure food safety but also it promotes an ecological balance of our environment. It is a sign of sustainable development for our earth. The use of fertilizers on a global scale emits significant quantities of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. Agrochemicals and artificial fertilizers can harm the environment.
Fair Trade
Fair trade is an organized social movement and a system of exchange that seeks to create greater equity and co-operative partnerships through international exchange. Fair Trade advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods. Fair trade's strategic intent is to deliberately work with marginalized producers and workers in order to help them move from a position of vulnerability to one of security and economic self-sufficiency.
The Green Room use Fair trade coffee
Coffee is the world's second-largest legally traded commodity after oil. Ten years ago, 33 percent of the value of coffee exports were retained within coffee producing countries. Today, less than 10 percent of the value stays. About 125 million people, many of who live in poverty, depend on the coffee trade. This means that fairness of trade can make important differences to their well being.
Fair Trade farmers tend to practice sustainable farming. They lack capital to clear forests, buy chemical fertilizers and pesticides. They generally grow small plots of mixed-crop, shade grown coffee organically.
The Green Room uses two types certified fair-trade Arabica espresso coffee beans from Yirgacheffee in Ethiopia (the homeland of coffee) and from Huehuetenango in Guatemala.
